Thereās a striking image of Princess Diana and Michael Jackson thatās always stayed with me.
At first glance, it looks like a simple moment shared between two legends, but dig a little deeper and thereās so much more to their story.
Neither Princess Diana nor Michael Jackson needs any introduction ā their iconic status speaks for itself.
It wasnāt unimaginable that these two larger-than-life figures would cross paths, but few could have predicted that their meeting would lead to more than just polite small talkā¦

Only met in person once To start, Diana ā affectionately known as āThe Peopleās Princessā ā was a passionate music fan. Her favorite band was reportedly Duran Duran, and she especially loved their music during the 1980s.
Her record collection also included albums by Michael Jackson, showing she genuinely enjoyed his music too. She was said to have played Thriller and Bad on repeat.
MJās music was also the reason Diana met him on July 16, 1988.
That day, she and her then-husband, Prince Charles, attended Michael Jacksonās Bad tour concert at Wembley Stadium ā their first and only meeting.
āShe told me she was honored to meet me,ā Jackson said in a 1997 interview with Barbara Walters.
Michael recalled feeling incredibly nervous before shaking Dianaās hand ā a tension you can almost sense in the photos from that day. Their first encounter felt awkward and tentative for a reason.
Jackson had removed the song āDirty Dianaā from the concert setlist, worried it might offend her. The song, which is about a rock groupie, seemed inappropriate to perform with a royal in attendance ā or so he thought.
āI took it out of the show in honor of Her Royal Highness,ā Jackson told Walters.
Dianaās reaction to meeting Michael Jackson But the decision didnāt sit well with Diana.
During the meet-and-greet before the show, she asked Michael if he was going to perform āDirty Diana.ā He explained that he had removed it out of respect for her. She insisted he perform it, encouraging him to go ahead with the song. Ultimately, Michael did.
Jackson was clearly a fan of Diana and held deep respect for her.
āI thought the princess was just wonderful,ā he told reporters at the time.
Knowing how much she adored her sons, Michael gifted her two miniature tour jackets for Princes William and Harry.
Diana, an avid pop fan, reportedly danced throughout the concert while Prince Charles remained seated.
Was Michael Jackson in love with Diana? Few expected that their 1988 meeting would spark a powerful connection.
āWe were very close,ā Jackson told German media in 1999. āShe was extremely close by phone⦠I was still married to Lisa Marie [Presley]. Diana would wake me up late at night⦠mostly after three in the morning! And she held me for hours on the telephone. She talked mostly about her children and the press.ā
Michael claimed Diana kept him on the phone for hours.
āLisa Marie used to get so jealous sheād go into the other room, pick up the receiver, and listen in,ā he said.
Whether those late-night calls truly happened remains unconfirmed. According to Dianaās friends who spoke to The Express, Jackson reportedly never had her private number. If he called Kensington Palace, staff were instructed not to connect him to the princess.
What we do know is that they shared similar experiences and a passion for the same causes.

Both Diana and MJ were deeply involved in civic work. When they met, Jackson had donated $188,000 to the youth-focused Princeās Trust and another $126,000 to the childrenās charity at Londonās Great Ormond Street Hospital.
They also shared a taste for jewelry ā both were clients of Englandās renowned fashion jeweler, Butler & Wilson.
But was there something deeper than friendship and shared values?
Jacksonās former bodyguard, Matt Fiddes, confirmed the late-night calls and claimed the singer was āin loveā with Diana.
Fiddes, who worked closely with Jackson for a decade, said:
ā[Jackson] felt she was the only person in the world who could understand his life ā not being able to go anywhere, the media stories that spiraled out of control⦠The intrusion into private life, having no privacy, the children being hounded.ā
How did Michael Jackson react to Dianaās death? Another bond between Jackson and Diana was their shared experience with paparazzi. Both were among the most photographed people in the world.
Dianaās constant spotlight and her contrast with the royal family drew endless tabloid attention. Similarly, Jacksonās life and evolving appearance made him a media magnet.
The two reportedly remained friends until Dianaās tragic death in 1997.
When Michael learned of her passing, he was devastated. According to The Express, the news hit him so hard he fainted and had to be revived with smelling salts.
He postponed a performance on his HIStory tour. Scheduled to perform in Belgium before 60,000 fans, Jackson was reportedly too stunned to take the stage.
In a sad twist, Diana died just two days after Jacksonās 39th birthday.
When he returned to the stage days later, he paid tribute to her: āIn my heart, I was saying, āI love you, Diana. Shine. And shine on forever, because you are the true princess of the people.āā
Did Michael Jackson attend Dianaās funeral? Jackson did not attend the funeral. Instead, he went to a memorial service in Los Angeles, telling reporters he wanted to āhonor my friend who is no longer here⦠I love her.ā
Dressed in black, wearing a black fedora and red armband, Jackson arrived at the church surrounded by bodyguards. He was one of 1,000 guests.
Jackson spoke fondly of Diana many times after her death. In 2003, he said she was āone of the sweetest people Iāve ever known, because we could relate to each other.ā
He added, āWe shared something in common ā the press. I donāt think anyone was hounded more than her and myself. We had a relationship where weād call each other late at night⦠just cry on each otherās shoulders about how hard and cruel the tabloids could be.ā

Itās fascinating to see Diana and Michael Jackson together. Sadly, both were lost too soon under tragic circumstances. The photographer who captured that iconic moment likely didnāt realize its historic weight. Yet in hindsight, the image reflects the first tentative steps of a bond that would quietly deepen over time.
